Musk Ox

Victoria Island
Cambridge Bay

The village of Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island bills itself as the Musk Ox capital of the world. Cambridge Bay comes by the title honestly because Southern Victoria Island has a population of 30,000 of these ice age big game species. The Musk Ox population for the entire island is estimated at 45,000. Musk Ox hunts are conducted by snowmobile and sled. The hunters are transferred this way to camp and hunt in this manner from camp. The guide drives the snowmobile and the hunter rides on a sled. The snowmobile gives the guide and client a great deal of mobility to cover a lot of ground and generally to see and look over a good number of adult bulls. Some clients have seen dozens of adult bull Musk Ox and many times more adult bull caribou. The hunting camps are very basic plywood cabins heated with kerosene or stove oil. Clients can rent down parkas and down wind pants at very nominal cost in Cambridge Bay upon arrival. This outfitter has been operating hunts here for well over 15 years with 100 percent hunter success even with bow hunters. Virtually all of the heads taken by bow hunters would quality for the Pope and Young record book and certainly the SCI record book.
